Palm Coast bicyclist was critically injured just after 7:00 p.m. on October 21, 2015 and was airlifted to the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach hospital after a car collided into her. The crash happened at the intersection of Felshire Lane and Fellowship Drive in Palm Coast.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Kiara Hemby, 18, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina southbound on Felshire. Kiara Hemby’s vehicle ran into Bailey Ann Cagliuso, 26. Ms. Cagliuso was riding her bicycle out of the driveway of her home.
The driver, Kiara Hemby and here three year-old passenger did not sustain any injuries during the crash.
The Sunshine State has long been the most lethal in the nation for bicyclists.
There are many reasons why: wide and fast roadways, lack of safety education, bad drivers, under-equipped bicyclists, yearlong riding weather, and lagging infrastructure and laws. Many safety advocates, planners, lawmakers and law enforcement are patching together solutions.
We urge all drivers to be extra cautious and watch out for bicyclists.
