A man traveling his bicycle in the westbound lanes of State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach, was hit by an SUV.  At approximately 10:20 a.m. on October 27, 2015, emergency crews were called after Jefferey Barnes, 37, of New Smyrna Beach crashed into the bicyclist with a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The critically injured man was transported as a trauma alert via helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center.

Onlookers pulled the man and his bicycle from underneath the front of the Jeep.  Police then arrived at the scene west of Pioneer Trail.

Firefighters and police worked the scene and the westbound lanes of S.R. 44 were closed for nearly three hours.

Charges are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
