Who’s Driving Home Drunk From The Game?

It’s probably no surprise that sports fans drink alcohol during professional games, but a new study shows that about 8 percent of the fans leave the game legally drunk, and tailgaters who drank before the game were 14 times more likely to drive drunk.

In testing fans of professional football and baseball teams after a game, researchers found 40 percent had consumed alcohol. A University of Minnesota preliminary study published this month in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research tested blood alcohol levels for 362 adults as they were leaving 13 baseball games and three football games. Those with blood alcohol levels of .08 or greater were considered drunk.

The study also found that tailgaters who drank before the game were 14 times more likely to drive legally drunk than those who hadn’t. And fans younger than 35 were nine times more likely to be drunk than others.

Interestingly enough, the study found attendees of Monday night football games, like those Volusia County fans might attend in nearby Jacksonville, Tampa or even Miami, were more likely to have positive blood alcohol levels compared to attendees at all other games.
