Florida is a dangerous state. Alligator attacks, deadly and venomous snakes, flesh-eating bacteria, and lightning strikes all make living in Florida a risky decision.
Just these past few months, Florida has seen an increase in alligator attacks and flesh-eating bacteria hospitalizations. In fact, two people were bitten by alligators in June, including a 5-year-old girl.
Earlier this summer, a 12-year-old girl was hospitalized after contracting the flesh-eating bacteria on a recent trip to Destin with her family. Since 2010, 1,200 cases of flesh-eating bacteria occurred across the United States.
While these cases may seem extreme, they’re just a small sampling of the dangerous and life-threatening situations many Floridians deal with on a regular basis. Throw in sinkholes, hurricanes, and one of the highest rates of motorcycle accidents, and it’s no wonder WalletHub recently ranked Florida as the 3rd most dangerous state in the country. Only two states were worse: Louisiana and Mississippi.
To determine how safe a state might be, the report focused on several key factors including:
- Personal and residential safety
- Financial safety
- Road safety
- Workplace safety
- Emergency preparedness
Florida scored lowest in financial safety, and personal and residential safety. It also made the list of one of the worst states with the highest share of uninsured residents.
Are There Safe Places in Florida?
WalletHub also examined the safest places to live in America. Sadly, no Florida cities made the top 20 list for safest places to live. However, Cape Coral, Florida ranked as the safest city in the state. According to the report, it ranked 24th in safety when compared to other cities across the country.
Other safe Florida cities included:
- Pembroke Pines – ranked 29th
- Tallahassee – ranked 58th
- Hialeah – ranked 75th
- Tampa – ranked 97th
- Port St. Lucie – ranked 108th
